Book Projects

Each month students will be expected to complete at least one book outside of the class work.  The goal is to encourage reading and learning about different types of reading and authors. CPT/half days are excellent days to work on book projects.  There will also be rewards for additional reading above and beyond the required projects

September: This month you will read a book of your choice on your reading level.  You will then need to create a hanging mobile or tri-fold pamphlet with the Title and Author, pictures of Characters, Setting, and demonstrate Plot, Conflict and Resolution in some way.  Include significant events and message. Students will display these and be able to explain them to the class. Due September 29

October:  Your book project this month needs to be a biography about a famous explorer, American Inventor, or Famous American from before the end of the Civil War.  You will create a “Big Head” poster of or dress up as this famous person and present their life and significant events from their life in first person as if you are that person. Hero Party with presentations Due October 31

November: This month will be a group book project based on a historical Fiction book.  2 to 6 students will read the same book and create a presentation to give to the class. This can be done as a live skit in front of the class, or as a video taped project away from school and played in class.  Most rehearsal time will need to be outside class time. This is the month of Parent/Teacher Conferences with many half days to read.   Due November 28 -30(Read-a-thon Begins November 24 through April 16)

December: How many books can you read? Write a newspaper article about each of the books you finish before the end of December.  Additional articles may be completed after the 21 for extra credit.  Due December 20

January: This month students will read a Newbery award winning book and present a Powerpoint presentation to the class.  The book needs to be read as soon as possible so the presentations can be planned and completed when we have access to the computer lab. Due January 31

February/March: For this project, you will need to read at least four books by the same author and write a companion book.  It must have at least three chapters, a beginning, middle and end.  Show Characters, Setting, and demonstrate Plot, Conflict and Resolution in some way.  Include significant events and message. Due March 30

April/May:  Choose a Series to read.  Make sure it is one you can and will finish all of the books.  When you have finished the books create a board game that shows what the books are about.  You will explain how the project depicts the storyline. Due May 25
